In 2025, we were invited to support a meaningful refurbishment project in central Birmingham. The Edge is a youth, community and arts space that serves children and adults from all walks of life, including neurodivergent individuals. Their goal was clear: replace an existing domestic kitchen with a semi-commercial setup that could properly support community cooking, learning and events.
From our first meeting, we understood this project was about more than appliances and layout. It was about creating a safe, accessible and inspiring space that reflected the inclusive values at the heart of The Edge. At Simply Commercial Kitchens, those values resonate deeply with us, and we were proud to play a part in bringing this vision to life.
This was our starting point:
The existing kitchen was domestic in scale and specification. It could not support the volume, durability or accessibility required for a busy community environment. The layout also needed improvement to ensure wheelchair access and safe movement for users of all abilities.
The space itself had character, including exposed brickwork that the client wanted to retain. Our challenge was to introduce commercial-grade hygiene, durability and compliance without stripping away the personality that made The Edge unique.
We carried out a full rip-out of the existing domestic kitchen before installing a new semi-commercial solution tailored to the space and its users.
The works included:
Every element was chosen to balance performance, durability and accessibility.
This project meant a great deal to us on a personal level. At Simply Commercial Kitchens, inclusivity is not just a statement, it is part of who we are. Starting Simply was also about creating a working environment where individuals with neurological challenges, including my own son, could feel welcomed, supported and valued.
The Edge shares those same principles. Their commitment to supporting young people and adults from diverse backgrounds made this collaboration especially meaningful. Designing a kitchen that is accessible for wheelchair users and welcoming to all abilities was not an afterthought. It shaped every decision we made.
From our first in-person meeting, we listened carefully to Sandra and Lee. They needed a space that was practical, robust and inclusive, but also warm and reflective of their creative community.
We developed a thoughtful and fit-for-purpose design that improved workflow while ensuring clear access routes and safe working zones. Retaining the exposed brickwork was important to the identity of the space, so we introduced hygienic Perspex cladding to maintain character while meeting hygiene standards.
The result is a semi-commercial kitchen that feels integrated into the building rather than imposed upon it.
Our installation team worked efficiently and respectfully within an active community environment. We maintained clear communication throughout the project, from quotation through to handover.
The anti-slip flooring improved safety. The bespoke stainless fabrication provided durable prep and wash areas. The Lincat 6-burner oven range delivered the power required for group cooking sessions, while the semi-commercial Smeg dishwasher ensured reliable and efficient clean-down.
We completed the installation to a fixed competitive price, giving the client confidence and clarity from start to finish.
The transformation has given The Edge a kitchen that genuinely supports its purpose. The space is now robust enough for regular community use, accessible for wheelchair users and welcoming for individuals of all ages and abilities.
Seeing the client over the moon, proudly standing in their new kitchen, was the highlight for our team. It reinforced why we do what we do at Simply Commercial Kitchens.

“We engaged the services of Simply Commercial kitchens to refurbish our space in central Birmingham. ‘The Edge’ Birmingham: we’re a youth, community and arts space serving a wide range of needs, people and ideas. From our first meeting, which was in-person, Alex and Jai listened, understood and delivered a deeply thoughtful, practical and unique design – fit for purpose, accessible for wheelchair users and beyond. The whole process was rigorous from comms to quote, to delivery. Their install team was thoughtful, swift, professional, TIDY! and a pleasure to host. They have defied the usual complex and fraught experience of having construction/builders – and the competitive price quoted, was fixed. The professionalism, the design, the care, the attention to detail was unique. It has been an utter pleasure to work with Alex, Jai and the Simply Commercial kitchens team. Our users, young and old are excited – may the cooking commence.”
